About TFI.

Africa is rich in leaders but starved of true leadership. Too often, leadership is mistaken for power rather than service. We exist to change that, one young leader at a time.

Our story

The Fort Institute was founded on 9 April 2020: a conviction shared by a small group of young Africans that grew into a youth-led, volunteer-powered non-profit headquartered in Abuja, with Forts in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Every Board member, executive leader and programme associate gives their time pro bono. Proof that excellence does not need titles or paychecks, only conviction and community.

2.1

What we believe

Our work rests on one conviction. We say it plainly, and we say it often.

Africa’s challenges are not primarily economic or political. They are human.

And human challenges are solved by people who have been formed well enough to address them.

2.2

Vision and mission

Written exactly as approved. Never paraphrase them.

Vision

Africa thriving through transformational leadership in our lifetime.

Mission

To transform African youth into active and vibrant citizen-leaders.

2.3

Mind · Heart · Hands

Our values shape what we say, what we make and who we celebrate.

Mind

Critical thought. We question the ideas we inherited and refuse to treat African knowledge as inferior. From imitation to creation.

Heart

Service and integrity. Leadership is a responsibility to others, not a claim to power. Africa needs leaders who can be trusted.

Hands

Action. We act, not just learn. Every Fortifier carries a capstone project into their own community.

2.4

The Fort Model

Three verbs, simple enough to scale anywhere. They also shape how our brand moves (see Motion).

01

Identify

We seek out high-potential young Africans with the drive and character to lead.

02

Equip

The FLDC and BOLT give them the tools to lead, inside a community of peers.

03

Activate

Fortifiers drive change through ventures, governance and local reform.

2.5

Theory of Change

Our official Theory of Change, in four steps. Scroll and each one opens in turn.

If

Africa’s leadership crisis is addressed at its root, by transforming people, institutions and culture,

Then

young people across sub-Saharan Africa will be equipped to lead with integrity, responsibility and a deep understanding of institutional change,

Which will result in

community-rooted, youth-led solutions that reshape civic life and challenge broken institutional norms,

Ultimately

transforming the culture of leadership across the continent for lasting, generational impact.

Our people and words

Our community has its own names. Use them: they carry meaning, and they are part of the brand.
