Symbols & pattern.

Our own visual language, drawn from the Fort, the book and African mats and cloth. Symbols explain, motifs weave, patterns frame, illustrations carry campaigns. Every one of them can be copied from this page.

Shown: the ten Fort Symbols, drawn, and the twelve Fort Motifs, woven, in Fort Red, White and Ember.

9.0

Fort Symbols

Ten bold, flat symbols for screens, campaigns and merch: the Fort, the book, and Adinkra forms whose meanings match ours. Pick one, choose a colourway, copy it into Figma or download it.

Fort Motifs

Twelve icons woven, not drawn. Each sits on a 10 × 10 weave grid, like a mat or a strip of cloth: only squares, only right angles. One motif per icon; many motifs per band.

Build a pattern

Make a pattern for a backdrop, a lanyard or a slide edge. Pick the family, the layout and a colourway, then download it as an SVG for Figma.

Patterns sit on edges and backgrounds, never behind body text.

9.3

Mat Bands

Woven motifs stacked into narrow strips, the way cloth and mats are built. One band on one edge of a layout: certificates, invitations, programmes, lanyards, book spines.

Illustration styles

One style per piece, never mixed, chosen by what the piece must do: red objects for campaigns, Fort Symbols for systems and explainers, photo collage for people and stories. If an illustration only decorates, remove it. Use these three. Four more styles for special cases are in the AI chapter.

Interface icons

For interfaces, forms, slides and small labels we use Phosphor, Bold weight only, at 24 px or larger, in Ink or Fort Red. Fort Symbols carry meaning; Phosphor icons only point and label. Search by keyword, then click an icon to copy its name.

Never mix Phosphor with another icon set, never switch them to another weight or fill them, and never put a Phosphor icon where a Fort Symbol belongs.
