Imagery.

Photography is our largest visual surface. We show young Africans as what they are, capable leaders in their own communities, and we show leadership happening, never posed.

Three principles

Use them as a checklist when you shoot, choose or crop. Pick one to see it.

Authentic

Real Fortifiers in real places: classrooms, town halls, campuses and Fort meetings. Natural light, real people, their own dress.

Purposeful

Leadership in progress: speaking, organising, listening, building. Hopeful and determined, never decorative.

Collective

Leadership is shared. Favour groups, cohorts and communities: I am because we are.

Three treatments

Only three. Choose one for a whole set or series; never mix them inside one. Switch them below.

The default. Neutral white balance; skin always true. Use it for almost everything.

Documentary sets: workshops, archives, reflective stories. A whole set, never one stray frame.

Campaign heroes and story series only. Never on an individual celebration, never on The Well.

Cropping

Crop for the format before you design. Keep eyes on the top third, leave clear headroom above the head, give the face room to look into, and never cut at a joint: neck, elbow, knee, wrist.

Faces first

Shoot at eye level and close, at the moment of reaction. Every set needs listeners, not just speakers. Reframe away from cluttered walls, cables and laptop-blocked podiums.

Cut-out portraits

Speaker, birthday and awardee portraits are cut out, chest-up and smiling, and placed on one flat field from the layout’s mode. Names in Crimson Text.

Numbers and charts

We chart in honest units: one tick is one year. Hero numbers sit in Crimson Text; every chart says what it counts and when. Fort Red marks the one thing to see; everything else is Ember.
